Abels Moving Services has scooped two prestigious awards at the 2017 London to Brighton Commercial Vehicle Run, which is organised by the Historic Commercial Vehicle Society.
The 54-mile Run sees around 200 members enter vehicles from 1909 throughout the ages, showcasing a wide range of both historic periods and commercial functions.
Now in its 56th year, the event begins each year at Crystal Palace Park in South London, with a half-way stop in Crawley town centre and finishes on Madeira Drive on Brighton’s historic seafront.
Abels’ was represented in the Race by a restored Bedford MLD Removal Truck, which was driven by the company’s Operations Manager, David Potter and Senior Storeman, Mitch Bowen.
The truck has a 6 cylinder 27.34 hp petrol engine, 4 speed crash gearbox with a single dry plate clutch delivering power to a floating rear axle with spiral bevel final drive. Brakes were Lockheed hydraulic type and servo assisted operating on all four wheels.
The M series is a commercial vehicle chassis, the first variants of which were produced by Bedford in 1939 mainly to support the war effort. There were two wheelbase lengths offered; MS (short) 10’ 0” or ML (long) 11’ 11”. Production of these ran through to 1953. Abels showcased the MLD and the D meaning drop-side.
The vehicle’s first owner was the Worcestershire War Agriculture who originally used it as a flat-bed truck to help the allied war effort and number plated DWP40.
In 1951, the truck was purchased and bodied as a removal van with a 750 cubic foot box and drop tail before it was retired in 1967.
The truck remained forgotten in the corner of a yard until 1983 when it underwent a seven-year full nut and bolt renovation with all parts remaining original with the exception of a few box panels and a hinged bonnet.
2015 saw further refurbishment to the truck including a cellulose repaint and hand sign writing.
Abels restored Bedford came first place in the Class D category for Large Vans and Lorries that were built between 1940 and 1959.
It was then awarded second place overall for the Concours d’Elegence Award where it was judged against all finishers who reached Madeira Drive.
The show-winning Abels MLD is being displayed at other shows around East Anglia during the Summer months where the public will be able to see the restored vehicle up close.
